PROUDLY AFRIKAN
Proudly Afrikan was honoured to be invited to the Design Indaba 2011 in Cape Town.
As usual, the exclusive South African expo managed to collect the most inspiring leaders of contemporary art and design from around the world. One of the most memorable speakers for me was our own Laduma Ngxokolo. After only a 15 minute presentation he received a long standing ovation for his design solutions for a range of Xhosa inspired knit-wear.
Port Elizabeth born Laduma uses mohair knitted textiles to explore the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Xhosa people.
His designs are inspired not so much by the traditional meaning given to African patterns and shapes but by elements of our culture, heritage and even our food. Sweaters made for Xhosa boys who have just been initiated into manhood appeal to men who are rooted in their culture but also inspired by urban fashion. Can you imagine knitwear patterns inspired by samp and beans?

Ngxokolo’s winning garments feature a delicate blend of Merino wool and Kid mohair, which was specifically combined to cater to the needs of Xhosa men.
It is a pity that Design Indaba is such an exclusive and expensive affair. Our artists could truly benefit from seeing this showcase of creativity, design and innovation. Tickets to the three day event cost R2,100 a day.

It was even more inspiring to see our Laduma Ngxokolo teaching the world that design is “not about the world of design, it is about the design of the world.”

“I hope to one day become known for my ethnic inspirations and encourage consumers around the world to embrace my uniquely South African collections.” – Laduma Ngxokolo.
Later that evening, at the Design Indaba after party, we were blessed by a very exhillirating performance by the truly original Spoek Mathambo who had to return on stage after a deafening encore. Ofcourse the highlight of the evening was when Brother Hugh Masekela who joined Black Coffee for an unforgetteable house and jazz music collaboration.
